As I’m preparing for posting the Beverly Cleary Children’s Choice Award resource sharing page- putting it off until I finish one last book- I thought I’d quickly post about two early chapter book series that I encountered recently. Shocked I didn’t know about either before, easily rectified.

Frankie Pickle Series: What a hilarious book series! Perfect for me to refer Bad Kitty fans to in addition to any boy who is ready to move from reading graphic novels to early chapter books or vice versa. I’m excited about this series since it has wonderful illustrations, is entertaining, and easy for a fun read aloud. Plus there are a number of other fun early chapter book series I can think of that I could refer my students to if they like it!

Frankie Pickle and the Pine Run 3000 by Eric Wight – this book is what I’m presently in the middle of reading aloud to my son. He groaned when I tried to close the book and squeezed another chapter out of me. Additionally, he asked me to help him find a good fit chapter book series he can read on his own. Oh boy. I’m excited about this chance. I didn’t want to push him but THANK YOU FRANKIE PICKLE/ERIC WIGHT for helping my son finally realize that he might be a strong enough reader for some of the early chapter books on the shelves… or so I hope. We’ll be investigating soon!

AND it will become a tv show series soon enough!

Another series with the cute Dessert character is by Hallie Durand I’m already a huge fan because of her picture book Mitchell’s License which I read daily for a number of weeks to my son. So now, when there was a random librarian collaboration time, a colleague pointed out the book Dessert First to me and said, you’ll like this one, it is very cute. Reminds me of Grace Lin’s books- Year of the Dog/Rat/Dumpling Days and also Just Grace series by Charise Mericle Harper. Although to be honest, I also found myself thinking of Beverly Cleary’s endearing Ramona as I read the first chapter with a little girl talking about her day at school…

Hallie Durand’s Series: Such a cute voice and personality- comes across within a moment of reading.
