Styling Librarian: Hong Kong Transition, positives and negatives – Week 2 Update
A wonderful student who I’ve adored and taught for years is keeping up through email. The other day she wrote and asked the question, “What is Hong Kong like?”
It took me a while to really find an answer. In my head I kept on finding positives and negatives to share… Keep in mind, we’ve only been here two weeks and most of that time has been consumed with apartment hunting and getting accustomed to ferries. We’ve snuck in a little fun with hikes, walks, movies, library and bookstore visits, open-air market visits, and museum adventures… but we’re looking forward to more fun and exploration soon:
So, I replied simply with positives and negatives, here they are:
Also, I’ve been recording really quick videos to communicate with my wonderful, fantastic sister, so here are a few of them for a different glimpse into life in Hong Kong:

These are unforgettable experiences, aren’t they? I’m with you on the squat toilet. I’d hold out as long as possible on that one!
Thanks! Trying to document as these weeks fly by…
Love the short videos and your concise list of positives and negatives! The grocery store line looked crazy! Is it always that packed? And I hear ya about the food — the would be really hard for me. I am such a fussy eater, I don’t know how I would adapt. However, I have heard the squat toilets are good for you — give it a try! Just think of the great stories you can tell when you get back!!!
Oh, what an adventure! Thanks for sharing the highs and lows of it all. Being from recycling-centric Oregon, that recycling thing must be driving you crazy. Being a PNW-er myself, I’m known to lug home recycling trash in my purse . . .
Our wind storms scare me, so I can only imagine your typhoons! Yikes.
